YOU TALKIN' TO ME?

Lazy thoughts on Taxi Driver

Taxi_Driver_poster

It's probably not surprising that I'm a big Martin Scorsese fan. After all the man is the kind of artist who has created films with a scope and influence that is probably incalculable. Even those of us who acknowledge the weight of his influence are probably still selling him a little short. His work is so embedded in American pop culture that it might as well be considered a part of the natural order. Which I realize makes heaping all this praise on him a little redundant--- but then again I see nothing wrong with stopping and admiring the treeline now and then.

A month or two ago, in the wake of viewing SHUTTER ISLAND I decided to revisit some of his early work and started at the most obvious place, 1976's TAXI DRIVER .

It'd been years, probably over a decade, since I'd seen the movie. A long time when you consider that I'm only 32 years old. Meaning I'd not seen this movie since my teens, so viewing it was quite like watching it for the first time. Which was, to say the least, a captivating experience. So interesting in fact that I found myself taking screen shots of it as I went, capturing little moments that I felt had significance or more than aesthetic value.

With that in mind, I've decided to post few of those shots. Presented without a lot of commentary, as I can't claim to be an expert on the movie. These are just lazy thoughts on things. Images I think brush on larger or more complex ideas. The kinds of moments I think you could tack up on a cork board were you to create some sort of brain scan of the film. Of course there are tons more, the task of compiling every great shot from that movie would take a life time.

So, yes... feel free to disagree. "This is an American free country. We've got a pursuit of happiness thing---"

1. -Inner psychology in an outer world? A boiling pot?:

2.-POV- Seems like from the view of Travis's window everything is stereotype.
He has very Romantic notions of very unromantic things.:

3. More romance? I found it interesting that Scorsese plays the jilted lover, and that Bickle stares off screen and out of the window until he realizes just what the guy is talking about. A turning point?:

4.-I find this one kind of poetic.:

5.-A small man with a gun and a cartoon bad guy:

6.-Beyond how cool this reveal is-- I'm amazed at how something as striking and otherwise over the top as the mohawk subtly covers and sums up all the ground between Bickle's rage, new found self confidence and his death wish:

That's that. It was hard but I tried to spare you too much faux intellectual talk. I hope it spurs some of you to rewatch it. It sure taught me a thing or two.

More soon--

PS- In trying to find a clip or two I ran across this, SCORSESE: SHOT BY SHOT. It's a five part interview, the last few minutes of part one begin to cover some of the shot selections of Taxi Driver.

FEAR LESS?

Possibly washed under the bulk of yesterday's PREVIEWS comics solicitations was the news that DAREDEVIL: BLACK AND WHITE #1 will be out this August. This is important to me because, well, among other things I'm drawing a good chunk of it. Here's a detail of some pencils from the story:

DD-BW 01

I was really fortunate to be asked in, a very big thanks to Brunner who was unfortunately unable to take the job but recommended me. The dude's too cool to be a saint, so lets call him one of my favorite sinners.

It's shaping up to be a fun project, very much in the vein of those great BATMAN B&W books from a few years past. Check out the classy David Aja cover:

Of all the Marvel characters Daredevil has always been one that I've had a lot of love for, but probably the coolest thing about it is revisiting the work of major influences like Miller and Mazzuchelli and the underrated Nocenti/Romita/Williamson (with Leonardi fill in) stuff I read as a kid. I actually bought a bunch of the latter at a dollar bin sale not long ago. Sufficed to say I'm trying to drop in a bunch of nods to that it all . Wish me luck.

Anyways, shameless self promotion over. More soon...

GRACELESS KELLY

How is Graceless Kelly not the name of the most kick ass girl punk band ever?

Graceless Kelly 01

My buddy and yours, Mike Freiheit, runs a drawing-challenge style blog called GRAW. Last month Brunner picked the topic and chose an image of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant on a picnic in TO CATCH A THIEF .

I didn't have time to do a full blow piece so I did the study above with a big fat brush pen. I tried to do the thing without any under drawing, the result is the part of Cary Grant now played by a giant black ink blob. The Anti-Grant.

Strategic Tree Fortress

Strategic Tree fortress.

A semi-crappy drawing of a tree that was behind the Showmars restaurant where the Sketch-Charlotte meeting was held last night. Seemed like a good strategic cranny for a tree fort and a raging case of poison ivy.

THE CAT HAS LEFT THE BAG

NOIR PROJECT 017

So yesterday Vertigo formally announced that NOCHE ROJA, a graphic novel by Simon Oliver and I, is slated for 2011 from the Vertigo Crime Line imprint.:

"In NOCHE ROJA, a timely and explosive mystery by Simon Oliver and artist Jason Latour, the murders of young women just South of the Mexican border hide a deeper, darker corruption that retired private investigator Jack Cohen becomes determined to expose if it’s the last thing he ever does. Which it may be."

More at the VERTIGO BLOG and at ROBOT SIX and a little sneak peek HERE .

I can't say what a relief it is to finally be able to formally talk about it.
The book is all drawn and in post-production. It's been a real exercise in patience to not only finish 177 pages but to keep mum as well.It was definitely an invaluable experience though. I tried to bleed for it. I hope that shows.

STATE OF THE UNION- MAY 2010
In other news I'm knee deep in the next work for hire gig, which is a really neat short and sweet opportunity to play with a character I grew up reading. Hopefully after that is what I feel is a once in a lifetime opportunity to collaborate with a really good friend and amazing writer on a passion project. LOOSE ENDS is shaping up more than pretty damn well and we should have something to say about that sooner rather than later. And lastly, I've begun pre-production on the next creator owned thing. So I guess it's business as usual around here when it comes to being a big stinkin' tease, but things are shaping up to be pretty busy. Which for once is a good thing.
