Anarene, Texas, 1951...

"The Last Picture Show is a 1971 American drama film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, adapted from a semi-autobiographical 1966 novel of the same name by Larry McMurtry."

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW

This is a quick illustration I did for something Criterion is putting together. They've asked a few comics artists to do interpretative pieces based on a short list of movies.. As you'd expect most of the poster art that goes with this film is in keeping with it's small Texas ghost town aesthetic. But since I do a lot of stuff like that already I tried to come up with something that I felt was different still fit the tone and story of the film. Which lead me to this, one of my favorite scenes in the movie, and one that sort of gets at what I think is a real undercurrent of the movie...the treatment and POV of women in a 1950s Texas/America.

Anyway, it's a great scene and a great movie. A great, great movie. And it's got Jeff Bridges looking goofy, a young (hot) Cybill Shepard (whodda thunk?) and Randy freaking Quaid as one of those nekkid kids up there.

I'll be in Baltimore this weekend for BALTIMORE COMIC CON.

I'll have copies of Daredevil B&W, sketchbooks, postcard prints and will be doing a small number of con sketches. Small simply due to the fact that I'm over due on far to many as it is. But if you'd like to line one up in advance you can email me at jaslatour@gmail.com and we can hash things out. Or just look for me at seat 1710D.
So holler atcher boy.

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

"I told that fuck down at the league office... who's in charge of scheduling?"

walter-1-low

Hoping to find the time to work on this Walter Sobchak commission soon. This is the rough approach, it's got a ways to go. The solution to the beard is something to over come. I think yellow on the glasses might solve some problems.

Anyways... maybe it's cliche' but THE BIG LEBOWSKI is my favorite movie. So I was stoked to take this one on. I saw the flick in the theater with my brother when I was in college and we both instantly fell in love. It's a pretty key influence. Speaking of influences...

INFLUENCE MAP

This meme has been floating around and Brunner and Rico did versions, which spurred me into doing one too. It ended up being an interesting and strangely useful exercise. I'm kind of heartbroken over things that didn't make the cut (No Kubrick?!?) but I tried to be really honest even when the influences were painfully obvious (Empire Strikes Back?). I'd go through and explain all the choices, presentation of those choices, but that kinda defeats the purpose, no?

WAITIN'

Trying to work through a few long overdue commissions. This is a Tom Waits I've owed for quite some time. Hopefully the likeness isn't too bad. I honestly can't see it anymore.

In other news... I squared away another trip to Balhmer for this year's Baltimore Comic Con. I love attending this show, it's a great city. If you're looking for me I'll be the guy ringing Brazilian steak juice from his beard. I hope I see you there.

REST IN PIECES

Today, a couple of panels from the SILVER SAMURAI back up that Jason Aaron and I did for Wolverine #1:

SAM-KILL

I wrapped this one up on Friday and I think it'll be in shops the first week of September. Big thanks to Rico Renzi for all his help on the colors. We were very collaborative (which I only mention because I don't want him taking the blame for some of this stuff), but he's the guy who kept us on the straight and narrow. He's a hell of a wing man, I'm lucky to have him involved. Jason's filled me in on some of what he's got planned and I think it's a really fresh and exciting direction for the character. So y'know give it a shot.

From here I'm moving into the prep work for SCALPED #43 , also with Jason Aaron. This one is a kind of stand alone (as stand alone as that book can be), character driven story featuring Wooster Karnow. The All-redneck issue if you will. Which begs the question... how much research into rednecks do I really have to do?

I plan to be a little more active on the blog in the coming weeks. For better or worse. Meaning you might have to scroll past some yakking for art. We'll seen.

Magic talking garbage

Tim Callahan (yeah the guy who writes books about Grant Morrison) interviewed me for his column on CBR. It was a lot of fun and Tim's enthusiasm for my upcoming work was beyond flattering. Seriously he says some things that I have no idea if I can ever live up to. I mean superstar? I dunno. I'd settle for Comics next big rent paying artist.

Click here to enter the mouth of madness. I hope you enjoy.

In the interview I mentioned some of my upcoming projects. One of which is a SILVER SAMURAI back-up in WOLVERINE #1 , written by Jason Aaron and colored by Rico Renzi. I'm really stoked to be in this one, and working with Jason and Rico. It's kind of a fitting first team-up with Aaron if you ask me...

SILVERSAM- morgue-1

This is an unused layout/under drawing/idea for a splash page. Which is a shame because it was kind of hard to draw, but I woke up this morning and realized it just wasn't the right shot. So it goes.

Anyways, a quick reminder that DAREDEVIL BLACK & WHITE #1 is out tomorrow. I hope you guys will give it a look.

Okay, shameless pimping and plugging over. Gotta snooze. More soon...
